A report from Swiss Paralympic
For Kevin Fetz, there is one moment that beats everything: being out in deep snow. For the man from Graubünden, riding his board through powder is the best memory of all. And anyone who thinks that this doesn't necessarily have anything to do with top-class sport will find that Kevin is a brother in spirit. Because in principle, this step was not even on his life plan. Although he worked in a snowboard store in Flims/Laax, where his environment actually consisted of top athletes on the snowboard. One day Silvan Hofer appeared in his store and the Swiss national coach for para-snowboarding asked him if he would like to join a training camp.
"After all, I knew the pro scene from my job," Kevin recalls, "and somehow I didn't feel that was my world." For a month he thought back and forth, knowing how stressful it is to race, all the preparation involved. But the sports-savvy and -crazy environment pushed him, of course, and finally he thought: why shouldn't I give it a try. And now he's on board, has gained his first racing experience and is looking forward to everything that's to come.
Because of his disability - an arthrogryposis multiplex congenita, congenital joint contractures - he works 80 percent, organizing the time for the races with overtime. In the meantime, Kevin is responsible for sales at Oakley in Landquart, "and I get wonderful support from Oakley, not just in terms of equipment." But anyone who is happy to talk about a terrific power day in Canada in the middle of a conversation is not only able to assess his current situation correctly, he also has the necessary composure. "I'm taking everything pretty lightly at the moment," says Kevin. After all, he's a newcomer and first has to get used to the new world. His primary focus as an athlete is therefore not Beijing 2022: "My big goal is the Paralympics 2026 in Milan/Cortina," he says.
